The Regional Governor of Attica, Rena Dourou, presented her report on the role of the Regions in connection to the migration phenomenon at the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe
In her keynote speech on the “Border Regions Facing the Migration Phenomenon’’ Report at the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, the Regional Governor of Attica, Rena Dourou, has stressed today, inter alia, the need to build an internal and external solidarity front to tackle the migration phenomenon, assigning responsibilities fairly, for the benefit of Europe's local societies.
The Regional Governor of Attica noted that the Report "is based on an integrated approach" covering all Regions, all levels of governance, and all stakeholders involved in the countries of origin, transit, stay and final destination, in the context of cross-border cooperation at both a European and a national level. “We are talking about a complex process which involves all stakeholders and creates an interconnection on many levels, a complex process in which integration policies for refugees and migrants play a crucial role,” noted the Regional Governor. She stressed the dynamics of the role of Local and Regional Authorities in addressing the migration phenomenon. “Local and Regional Authorities can offer a lot provided that that there will be a clear legislative framework at all levels, and the Local and Regional Authorities will be offered financial support,” pointed out the Regional Governor, while stressing that the decrease in the number of refugees in the first months of this year should not obscure the fact that the number of victims among people wishing to arrive in Europe has increased. “It is an unacceptable phenomenon,” she observed, while in her answer to a relevant question, she stressed that “the history of humanity is actually the history of migration.”
"We should become trustworthy custodians of the values of the Council of Europe"
Earlier, the Regional Governor of Attica had referred to the work of the outgoing President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Gudrun Mosler-Törnström, who has been the first woman President of this Institution, stressing her interventions on “crucial issues such as immigration.” “Our aim is to become trustworthy custodians of the values of the Council of Europe at the local level of governance. That is the values of democracy, peace, human rights, and the rule of law.” The Regional Governor also stressed that "This is not a matter concerning just one person, i.e. the President, but a matter concerning an entire mechanism,’’ adding that “today, 100 years since the end of the First World War, these values remain as relevant as ever.”
The Regional Governor of Attica was elected Vice-President of the Socialist Group of the Congress
On Monday, in the context of forming new alliances with the Left and the Greens, the Socialist Group of the Congress decided to elect the Regional Governor of Attica as Vice President of the Group. The Socialist Party is currently attempting an opening to new forces of the Left and the Greens, as noted by the President of the Socialist Group, Piero Fassino, who made a specific reference to the group's cooperation with the SYRIZA party from Greece and HADEP from Turkey as well as with Green Movements.
