The Council of Europe’s Initiative for the Protection of Roma Rights was signed by the Regional Governor of Attica

20180619 solidarityThe text of the Council of Europe’s Initiative against anti-Gypsyism has been signed today in Strasbourg, where the headquarters of the Council are located, by the Regional Governor of Attica, Rena Dourou, in the presence of the President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, GudrunMosler-Törnström.

The Regional Governor stressed, inter alia, the importance of the role of both degrees of Local Government in combating discrimination and racism against Roma people. "Tackling racist attitudes cannot be a case of a single Region, a single Municipality, or even a single country. Collective alertness and mobilisation are needed to put an end to the social exclusion of vulnerable social groups such as Roma people, in terms of social cohesion, respect for human rights and the rule of law,” stated the Regional Governor.

The signing of this Initiative is not a fragmented action. On the contrary, it adds another link to the solidarity chain that has been systematically built over the last 3.5 years by the administration of the Region of Attica, with specific initiatives and interventions to support and upgrade the daily life of Roma people in areas such as health, education, culture, etc. In cooperation with Municipalities, stakeholders and awareness-raising citizens, the Region of Attica creates the conditions for an essential support of the Roma communities, especially in the current conjuncture. "With equality and solidarity, we respond to the challenges and threats our society is facing due to racism and discrimination against our fellow citizens," concluded the Regional Governor of Attica, Rena Dourou.
