The United Nations flag will fly along-side the Greek flag on the Acropolis of Athens on 24 October to honour United Nations Day that marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. The UN Day celebration event will be co-organized by the Region of Attica and the United Nations Organisation. Representatives of the United Nations lead agency in Greece, Ambassadors to Greece, Greek state officials, Members of the Political Parties and of the Region of Attica are invited to watch the flag raising ceremony on the sacred rock of Athens.

The flag hoisting ceremony will be followed by a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Syntagma Square of Athens, where the UN designated official for Greece, the Regional Governor of Attica, the Mayor of Athens, the representative of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Coordinator of the Decentralized Administration will give an address on the occasion of UN Day.

Furthermore, on October 24, speeches will be given in schools throughout Greece on the special role of the United Nations in maintaining international peace and contributing to the protection and promotion of human rights.

The Regional Governor of Attica, Mr George Patoulis has recently held a meeting with UN officials, in which the establishment of closer cooperation between the Region of Attica and the UN has been commonly agreed with the aim of upgrading, strengthening and expanding bilateral cooperation on issues such as climate change and the environment.

On the occasion of 2019 UN Day the Regional Governor of Attica, Mr George Patoulis made the following statement:

"The role of the United Nations in serious issues from which the global community suffers, is well known and unquestionable. 74 years after the day the nations united their voices to seek solutions, the United Nations Organization pursues its mission with consistency, credibility and success. The Region of Attica profoundly values the UN as an institution, and looks forward to establish closer cooperation with it. Only through such partnerships would the Region of Attica be lead to the future it deserves."
