G.Patoulis: The Region of Attica will do its utmost to successfully organise the commemorating events
The Attica Regional Governor made the following statement on the occasion of the launch of a series of events commemorating the 2,500-year anniversary since the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Salamis.
"The Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Salamis are two historic events of greatest importance, whose significance transcends the national boundaries. In case the Greeks had been defeated 2500 years ago on these battles, today's boundaries and maps of Greece and of Europe would not have been the same. With self-sacrifice, solidarity, and courage our ancestors secured freedom and demarcated the borders between the West and the East. The Region of Attica will do its utmost to organise successfully the commemorating events and we should all work together to bring to light their global significance. In addition, in the context of the tourism promotion of Attica, a specific programme of promotion of historical areas such as Salamis and Marathon will be implemented."
During the event, it was announced that a National Committee would be set up to organize the 2500–year anniversary events. The Committee is coordinated and chaired by Mrs Marianna Vardinogiannis. The mayors of Athens, Sparta, Salamis, and Lamia are members of this Committee. The Regions of Attica, Peloponnese, and Central Greece will also participate in the Committee, while the Minister of the Interior P. Theodorikakos has an auxiliary role.
Ministers, Ambassadors of European Union countries, the heads of the Armed Forces, Mayors, and Regional and City Councillors have also attended the event at the Zappeion Megaron.
