New technologies play a critical role in defending democratic institutions”

20171107 lisbonThe Regional Governor of Attica, Rena Dourou, met yesterday with the Mayor of Lisbon, Fernando Medina, during the Web Summit Forum event, which she was attending as Head of a delegation from the Regional Development Fund of Attica at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa.

The meeting focused on the refugee / migration phenomenon and the challenges faced by local government in view of the possibilities and prospects created by new technologies in relation to the implementation of modern and good administrative practices. The Regional Governor of Attica stressed the need for a “holistic approach” to the refugee / migration phenomenon, which “is not a national but a European issue.”

Finally, she underlined that the current Administration of the Region of Attica places particular emphasis on changing the model of administration on the basis of tackling bureaucracy, non-transparency and corruption through the implementation of digital strategies and open data and social accountability policies.

“Bureaucracy often becomes an alibi for phenomena of corruption,” the Regional Governor of Attica pointed out, stressing the critical role of new technologies when these are put “in the service of defending the democratic, representative institutions, away from a commodification approach.”
