The Regional Governor of Attica, Rena Dourou, met yesterday with Gabriele Neff, Chair of the Current Affairs Committee of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe. Ms G. Neff, accompanied by Ms Renate Zikmund, Head of the Directorate for Legislative Work of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, completed yesterday her visit to Athens, at the invitation of the Hellenic Parliament and the Region of Attica.
At the meeting, the Regional Governor of Attica, a member of the Congress and member of the Current Affairs Committee herself, stressed the importance of the role of the Congress in addressing the refugee / migration phenomenon by pointing out every aspect of it. "Concerted efforts are needed at both the European and national level, to change the legal framework and enable the Regions to have direct access to the relevant financial instruments and programmes of the EU," stressed the Regional Governor. She referred to the recent Report of the Congress on "Reception and Integration of Refugees / Migrants into Local Communities", underlining the "need to activate a common European migration and asylum policy on the basis of a fair sharing of responsibility, without exclusions, putting up fences and closing borders". "The migration / refugee phenomenon is here to stay" – it requires setting up policies and structures that can make this phenomenon a factor of growth in local communities," noted the Regional Governor.
